It’s been 6 years since we’ve eaten at Marikka’s. One of our favorite places to eat authentic German food. I have to admit, I was a little nervous to go back. Once I heard news of Marikka’s closing in 2017, I was worried it wouldn’t open again. Marikka’s re-opening in February was music to my ears. I’m almost embarrassed it’s taken us this long to revisit one of my favorites.
You know how you build up some of your childhood memories so much that they can never live up to expectations? I was worried going back to Marikka’s would be the same experience. After my first taste of potato pancakes with applesauce, washed down with a Hofbrauhaus Maibock, I knew I had nothing to worry about.
But that wasn’t the end of it. The goulash. The spaetzle. The bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes). The kartoffelsalat (potato salad). With every bite, I knew the Marikka’s I knew and loved was back.
After battling a classic German starch coma, we decided to wander over to the newly renovated Marikka’s bar area. If you haven’t been there, I highly recommend it.
The 21 page beer list, complete with German and Belgian specialties, is just the start. Indoor and outdoor volleyball courts. Great decor inside. Enjoyed a Schlenferla Rauchbier, a German smoked beer, just one example of many exotic beers that you can only find at Marikka’s.
We are so happy to have Marikka’s back in Lexington. We are even happier that Marikka’s is back in all its former glory. If you have a chance to go to Marikka’s for authentic German food, German beer, or better yet, both, do it. You will not be disappointed. Prost!
