Ouita Michel is probably Lexington’s most famous restaurateur. We have embarrassingly been pretty slow to check out all of her restaurants. Inevitably, whenever we eat at one, we wonder why we hadn’t gone sooner.
Windy Corner Market happened to be the next restaurant on our “Ouita Michel list.” Sunday is usually our brunch/lunch day, so it was a perfect opportunity.
To start, the drive out to Windy Corner is amazing. I had never been past Hume Road on Bryan Station, but it is a beautiful drive. I honestly didn’t even know Bryan Station Road went out that far. Rolling hills. Horse farms lining both sides. If you catch it before the leaves fall or when snow falls, I’m sure it’s even better. A very peaceful way to start the day.
The restaurant sneaks up on you, as it is right off the main road on your left if coming from Lexington. Parking is both before and after the restaurant.
Walking in, you notice a very homey atmosphere. Lots of jams, ornaments, and trinkets for sale. You order at the counter, then sit and wait for your food.
Po’ boys are the main calling here. Shrimp, oyster, crawfish, and catfish, along with several Kentuckifed versions. I also had heard the burgers were delicious. As usual, we hedged our bet with one of each.
The fried shrimp po’ boy was amazing. A little tough to eat, but the remoulade sauce was great and the shrimp were large and flavorful. Make use of the extra napkins on the table. Greek orzo as a side was pretty good, but nothing special.
The bourbon barrel deluxe burger was covered in a messy, eclectic blend of bourbon BBQ sauce, bourbon bacon jam, and bourbon barrel beer cheese. Really a great blend of flavors and an overall excellent burger.
As usual, Ouita Michel uses tons of Kentucky proud ingredients, which adds to the freshness and is a source of local pride in the area.
We had a great meal at Windy Corner Market and will no doubt be back soon. The drive back down Bryan Station was even better with a belly full of po’ boy. Another Ouita Michel success.
